Liposuction surgery permanently removes areas of fat from the body via suction cannulas. The initial incisions are roughly 4mm long. Through this incision, a solution containing saline (a salt solution), adrenaline (to minimise bleeding) and a long acting local anaesthetic is infiltrated into the fat. Once the local anaesthetic has taken effect, a cannula – which is attached to a vacuum pump – is inserted under the skin into the area where the fat is to be removed. The cannula is moved backwards and forwards to loosen the fat, which is then deposited in a container via the vacuum pump.
The procedure time varies depending on the area being treated, approximately 60-90 minutes as a guide.
As this procedure is performed under a local anaesthetic you can normally resume most activities immediately, however the nurse will advise of any restrictions on activities post-treatment at consultation.
VASER Liposelection
VASER Liposelection is a relatively new type of liposuction procedure that uses ultrasound energy delivered through a titanium probe prior to sucking out fat, as the fat cells are broken up with the ultrasound energy making it much easier to remove them. The advantage of this two stage procedure over more traditional methods of liposuction is that it causes less bruising and swelling helping to shorten the recovery time.
Myths and facts about liposuction
Myth
The surgery will help with weight loss.
Fact
This is not weight loss surgery. Liposuction targets certain areas of stubborn fat that diet and exercise won’t remove.
Myth
If I put on weight the fat will come back.
Fact
The fat cells are permanently removed from that area, so they will never come back.
Myth
If I put lots of weight on it will go on my bum
Fact
If weight is gained it will be distributed around the body.
